FactoryFix explains how automation will impact manufacturing jobs in 2022

The Outlook for Automation and Manufacturing Jobs in 2022

The future of manufacturing jobs in 2022 is bright, even if automation may take over certain jobs. FactoryFix explains how!

Automation can seem like a dirty word in the manufacturing field; conversations tend to focus on its impact on existing jobs and the job market as a whole. You may even have seen some statistics painting a bleak future for anyone either working in the manufacturing industry or aspiring to work in the manufacturing industry. Before you panic and switch to a new industry, consider the reality of automation and its impact.

Automation Creates New Opportunities

While automation is estimated to replace 25% of U.S. jobs, according to a report published by the World Economic Forum, automation is also predicted to create 133 million jobs globally by this year. This is almost double the number of jobs that was said to be lost to automation this year. Additionally, the job market is constantly changing; one-third of jobs in the past 25 years were previously nonexistent or underdeveloped.

Technology, like automation, has the potential to grow businesses and create new and exciting employment opportunities. Think back to the industrial revolution, when advancements in cotton and steel manufacturing technology expanded the industry and established new jobs. A similar story happened when ATMs were initially integrated into banks. While the number of bank tellers per branch decreased, ATMs reduced operating costs enabling more branches to open. Ultimately, ATMs created more jobs than they replaced. If you’re still doubtful, recent research has also found that companies that have invested in automation have grown their workforce.

Automation Expands Industries

A study conducted by Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute estimated that, by 2030, there will be over 2.1 million unfilled jobs in the manufacturing industry. What does this tell us? Despite threats from automation, employees are still in high demand. Even with the wide use of industrial robots, manufacturers still need skilled professionals to keep things running smoothly.

One of the key trends emerging in 2022 is the need for manufacturing companies to adopt digital technology to remain competitive. Advanced technology like automation, robotics, and connected smart technology will help manufacturing companies and skilled professionals work smarter. This will lead to more efficient and reliable processes.

Automation will change the manufacturing job landscape by creating more demand for highly skilled workers in fields like engineering, information technology, and data analytics, as well as roles for technicians, electricians, and more. Even more traditional manufacturing jobs, like positions in management and operations, will require an understanding of digital technology. But it doesn’t just stop at adopting digital skills, adaptability is arguably an even more important skill to take into consideration.

The State of Manufacturing Jobs in 2022

As the new year progresses, manufacturing jobs in 2022 remain unfilled. Manufacturers will focus their efforts on fighting labor shortages by creating a work culture that will attract a new generation of skilled professionals. Many are focused on improving work-life balance, recognizing employee efforts and investing in training & education for existing employees. This makes it clear that manufacturing jobs in 2022 will not look the same as they did decades ago. Manufacturers will be increasingly looking to train skilled workers to have digital skills in tandem with traditional manufacturing skills.

The future of manufacturing jobs in 2022 is bright. Automation, robotics, and smart systems might replace some jobs but as previous technological advancements, they’ll create even more jobs and opportunities. As a skilled professional, now is the time to start a career in manufacturing or shift into a new role as an experienced skilled worker looking for your next move in manufacturing.
